Delhi University plans 2 Year Engineering (Btech.) Course
Delhi University (DU) is planning to introduce a two-year BTech course for science graduates so that they have better career options.
HRD minister Arjun Singh, who met university officials on Saturday, has also shown his interest in the proposal. "Though there is a lack of resources, science teaching should be given the utmost importance. I am keen on the the proposal," he said.
Normally completed in four years, the DU BTech course for BSc degree holders, if approved, will be a two-year programme offering specialisations in frontier areas of industrial research and development like robotics, design, microelectronics, materials and nanomaterials, chemistry and chemical engineering, software engineering, nuclear sciences and nuclear technology, biomedical sciences and biotechnology.
This is being done with an aim to encourage inter-disciplinary movement between science and technology, and also to bolster the morale of over 16 lakh science graduates.
Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental, who placed the proposal to Singh on Saturday, said: "A large number of talented science degree holders feel left out and discarded by the system. But, now this new course will provide them a range of choices in career development."
Also, he said the course will increase the free movement of meritorious students between science and technology.
"In addition, this course will help the students to decide whether to choose technology or basic sciences at the age of 20 and make more informed decision. This will also increase the prospects of the quality of research in the basic sciences," Pental added.
A similar proposal, however, has also been mooted by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) in their report on higher education in science for offering the course in several other institutes. These recommendations have been placed before the Planning Commission for consideration for the 11th Five-year plan
