UP technical University to abolish negative markings at entrance test


I n order to fill the seats in state engineering colleges, the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) has proposed to abolish the system of minus marking at the entrance examination. The entrance examinations are scheduled to be held on April 21 and April 22 this year.

However, in order to maintain the standards of the technical education, the University has at the same time proposed to raise the cut-off marks.

According to one of the members of the UPTU Executive Council, till last year the cut-off marks ranged between 15 to 20 per cent with minus marking. But due to minus marking, private colleges were not getting adequate number of candidates for filling all the existing vacancies, he added.

He said if the proposal was cleared by the academic council, the cut-off marks would be between 30 to 35 per cent and no minus marking would be done for giving wrong or irrelevant answer to a question. This would help the candidates to solve the question paper using their “guessing” skills, he said.

The two changes would be introduced in all the disciplines, including B Tech, MCA, MBA and several other courses run by the UPTU, he said.

He further said the UPTU had about 33,500 seats in B Tech but the number would go up to 35,000 after some of the engineering colleges in self-financing sector were given recognition. The entrance test for B Tech is scheduled for April 21.

There were 8,000 seats for MCA, 7,500 for MBA and about 16,000 seats for B Architecture, B Pharmaceutical and Hotel Management. The entrance test for these disciplines is to take place on April 22.

The UPTU had also been planning to eliminate all discrepancies in the entrance and counseling process, which had created trouble last year, the member said.
