Medical Education in India and US at Par

December 13th, 2007

The United States has said India’s recognition system for under-graduate medical courses is at par with theirs, an achievement that could facilitate mobility of doctors from here to US.

National Committee on Accreditation in the US, the apex body responsible for foreign accreditation, has granted parity to the recognition system in India for the courses.

“The MCI had sought parity status from the National Committee on Accreditation. It was granted last month, which means quality wise, the under-graduate courses in India are at par with the US,” Dr Vedprakash Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University, who was part of the MCI team to negotiate with the US agency, told reporters at the Indo-US Healthcare Summit here.

The parity has been granted for two years. “During this period, our recognition system will be monitored by them. Then India will get permanent parity status,” he said.

Which Business School Ranking to trust ?

December 13th, 2007

Various business magazines come out with surveys highlighting the top management institutions in the country. Some schools are always there at the top. The big three i.e. the Indian institutes of management (IIMs) at Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta, are always at the top. This is primarily because of their excellent pedagogy, faculty and infrastructure

India’s Best B schools 2007’: This phrase was seen on the covers of several magazines during the months of September and October. This was the time to catch the attention of common admission test (CAT) aspirants and recruiters.

With the scramble for CAT over in November, and the rush for the common entrance test (CET) to start in February, the question arises as to what kind of an impact do these rankings really have?

But beyond the big three, most rankings strike a discordant note. This year, in one ranking, Pune’s Symbiosis Institute of Business Management is ranked four, while it does not even feature amongst the top 20 in another ranking.

Likewise, ICFAI Hyderabad, which is ranked nine in one ranking, fails to find a mention amongst the top 30 in another magazine.

Says Dr. N.M.Kondap, vice-chancellor, NMIMS University, “These surveys are conducted using different metrics and parameters. There also occurs some amount of discrepancy during the assessment of the survey, which is then reflected in the results.”

All India Management Association (AIMA), which is the apex body for professional management in the country, is seeking help from business schools, to standardise the entire ranking process by defining parameters on which these rankings should be based. >. Read Complete story

West Bengal JEE abolition still under consideration

December 11th, 2007

Kolkata : Dec 11 -The proposal to abolish the West Bengal joint entrance examination (JEE) and admit students to medical colleges on the basis of their performance in the Class XII board exams is still under consideration, higher education minister Sudarshan Ray Chaudhuri said in the Assembly on Monday.

According to him, the state government might reconsider the proposal, depending on the verdict in a case related to introduction of a similar system in Tamil Nadu.

“Students are being admitted to medical colleges in Tamil Nadu on the basis of their Class XII marks. We had sent a team of higher education department officials to the state to study the system. The officials have submitted their report,” said the minister.

He added: “However, a case has been filed against the Tamil Nadu government’s move. We will take a decision on the issue if the court rules in favour of admitting medical students according to their board examination marks.”

The minister was replying to a question by Manas Bhuniya of the Congress on steps being taken to make the JEE more transparent, in the wake of the medical entrance scam.

Ray Chaudhuri pointed out that there were difficulties in re-introducing the pre-1962 system of admitting students to medical colleges on the basis of marks obtained in the school-leaving examinations. “There are 32 boards that organise Plus-II exams in India. We must have a clear policy regarding cut-off marks that covers all the boards.”

During the discussion, the minister said the upper-age limit of candidates seeking admission to medical courses through the JEE might also be raised.

To ensure that only fresh pass-outs make it to the medical courses, the state government had abolished the practice of allowing candidates to appear in the JEE (medical) as many times as they wanted to.

It was decided that from 2008, students will be allowed to appear in the JEE (medical) three times, starting from the year they sit for their Class XII exams for the first time.

For example, candidates who have passed Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination before 2006 will not be able to sit for next year’s JEE (medical).

The minister said the 2008 JEE would be held according to the new rules. “But discussions are on to allow aspiring students more chances to appear in the medical entrance tests.”
