Eight more new IITs approved – As many as eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) would be set up in the country during the current academic session to impart high quality technical education, reports the Economic Times
The new IITs would come up in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Indore in Madhya Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 6,080 crore, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said after a meeting of the Union Cabinet.
With the creation of new IITs, high quality technical education will become accessible to bright students as hardly two per cent of about three lakh students, who appear in the Joint Entrance Examination could get admissions in them, he said. The Cabinet also approved creation of 30 faculty posts per year in the first three years of establishment of each of the new IITs, besides approving the posts of a director and Registrar. A decision was also taken to raise the grade of all existing IIT Directors to Rs 26,000 (fixed) from Rs 25,000 now.
The IITs of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat would commence their classes for about 120 students each for B.Tech programmes through temporary campuses and would be mentored by IITs of Madras, Guwahati and Bombay respectively.
The three IITs of Rajasthan, Punjab and Orissa will start their classes in the campuses of their mentor IITs at Kanpur, Delhi and Kharagpur respectively, while the IITs at Indore and Himachal Pradesh will begin their sessions from the academic session 2009-10.

The Indian Institutes Of Management (IIMs) have increased the cost of their application forms by Rs 200 for general category and OBC students and by Rs 100 for SCs and STs for CAT-2008 , reports the Times of India
Last year, the Common Admission Test (CAT) form was priced at Rs 1,100 for open category students and Rs 550 for reserved category candidates. This year, this has been raised to Rs 1,300 and Rs 650 repectively. Interestingly, the management institutes had charged Rs 1,100 for the application form in 2004 and then increased it to Rs 1,200 for general category students and Rs 600 for SC/ST candidates in 2005.
In 2006, the IIMs brought down the rate of the form to Rs 1,100 for open category and Rs 550 for reserved category students. Sale of application forms brings in crores of rupees for IIMs. If 1.72 lakh students took the CAT in 2006, the numbers touched 2.07 lakh last year.
The CAT is IIMs’ golden goose. The exam rakes in handsome revenue for the management institutes. A report by the V K Shunglu (former Comptroller and Auditor-General) Commission had observed that IIM-Ahmedabad alone netted Rs 168.96 lakh in 2002-03 through CAT against Rs 4.25 lakh in 1991-92. At IIM-Bangalore, the collection was Rs 247.07 lakh, while the expenditure was Rs 51.4 lakh. In the case of IIM-Calcutta, the income from CAT increased to Rs 283.62 lakh in 2001-02 from Rs 33.97 lakh in 1992-93.
The IIMs, which will conduct the Common Admission Test on November 16 this year, have decided to continue with the paper-pencil test. Last year, the IIMs had advertised that they were looking for agencies to take the CAT online.

Indian Students Spend Rs. 10,000 Crore or about $2.3-Billion on Coaching for Some Entrance Exams
An Indian industry group has estimated that students here spend $2.3-billion annually on coaching to prepare for the entrance tests to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology and other engineering colleges, The Times of India reported today.
“The amount of money which goes to these institutions is enough to open 30 to 40 IIT’s with lots of seats that can ensure admission to average candidates,” Sajjan Jindal, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry, told the newspaper. Mr. Jindal urged the deregulation of Indian higher education, saying that the chief beneficiaries of the current system are big coaching centers.
A spokesman for the industry group said its figures were based on the assumption that 600,000 students attend coaching classes every year and that the average cost per student is $3,950. At least half the students who sit for the exams use coaching centers to beat the cutthroat competition, the spokesman said. A record 320,000 applicants took the entrance exam for the elite IIT undergraduate engineering program in April.
Some 80,000 to 90,000 students go abroad for higher education, leading to a high foreign-exchange outflow, the industry group said. “If quality institutions are provided, a large number of students will stay back and contribute to the nation,” the group said, adding that private players and big industrial groups should be allowed to contribute to higher education
