10 percent Quota for Non Karnataka Students

10 percent Quota for Non Karnataka Students

Good news for non-Karnataka students aspiring to study in Karnataka colleges.(Engineering/medical/dental)

The state government has decided to re-introduce 10 percent quota for non-Karnataka students in engineering, medical and dental courses from next year. But with a difference.

The students will be exempted from taking the Common Entrance Test (CET) to be conducted by the proposed Karnataka Examination Authority (now called the CET Cell).

Instead, they will be admitted on the basis of their scores in the all-India entrance exams like the All-India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) and All-India Pre-Medical/Dental Exam (AIPMT).

"Non-state students need not come all the way to Bangalore for the test. They just have to register with the exam authority by paying a fee and furnishing their AIEEE or AIPMT scores. The intention is to reduce the number of entrance exams,"higher education principal secretary Kaushik Mukherjee said.

The CET Cell scrapped the 10% quota in 2004 as it was eating into the government quota seats. As per the new provisions, non-state students will be eligible only for higher fee seats in both government and private institutes.

"This year, non-state students were eligible for admission only through Comed-K exam. Since we will have a single CET next year, out-station students will be eligible for admission in any college,"CET Cell sources said.

Just EAMCET Ranking not Enough - You need good marks in Inter

Move to Do away with Entrance Exams in a phased Manner

As per news in "The Hindu" The Andhra Pradesh Govt. has decided to introduce a weightage of 25 per cent marks scored in the Intermediate Public Examination (IPE) for EAMCET ranking from the academic year 2009.

Higher Education Minister P. Venkateshwara Rao said here on Friday that "Stating that this was part of the effort to strengthen the Intermediate education system, he said the weightage would be subsequently increased in a phased manner. The move, in other words, also suggests that Andhra Pradesh, in a phased manner, could go the Tamil Nadu way in doing away with common entrance tests.

The Minister said reforms were being planned in the Intermediate sector to bridge the gap between rural and urban students and bring uniformity in the system. He said a foolproof Intermediate system was a pre-requisite in case EAMCET had to be scrapped.

According to Board of Intermediate Education Secretary R.P. Sisodia, the evaluation system of IPE would also be revamped to avoid subjectivity and to ensure that no particular section was at a disadvantage when Intermediate marks were given weightage for EAMCET. The reforms in the Intermediate sector would primarily focus on syllabus, textbooks and question paper patterns. While the revision of the syllabus and textbooks were on, the question paper pattern would be revised next year only. Special committees were being constituted for each subject and to compare the system here with those in other states, Mr. Sisodia added.

The Government was also planning to bring the Intermediate syllabus on a par with CBSE apart from proposing coaching centres in Government colleges in all the districts to help students appear in different competitive examinations.

Tamilnadu Assembly passes bill to abolish CET

Tamilnadu CET Scrapped !

No MoreTamilnadu Professional Course Entrance Examination (TNPCEE) for tamilnadu students.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly today passed the bill to abolish Common Entrance Tests for admission to professional courses. (for admission to under graduate professional courses in the state.)

On the basis of the recommendations of the expert committee headed by Dr M Ananthakrishnan, former Vice Chancellor of Anna University, the Government had decided to bring forward a legislation abolishing CETs in the State in the winter session of the State Assembly.

The committee, after hearing the views of the students and parents for more than three months, had submitted its report to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. The report was also discussed by the state cabinet.

From the coming academic year(2007) only marks secured by students in Class 12 exam will be considered for admission to under graduate courses.

This means the ranking list of students will be decided on the basis of their marks in Class 12 and not on the basis of CET.

This will include engineering and medical colleges run by the state government and self-financing institutions.

Hurdles in Karnataka Post Graduate CET - 2007

As per TOI news today, The Karnataka government's ambitious plans of having a common entrance test for admission to university P-G courses has suffered a setback.

Reason: The Inter-University Board sub-committee has recommended that the task of selecting students be entrusted to an independent selection committee as it would be a logistical nightmare for a single university to conduct the tests.

During the meeting earlier this month, the committee headed by Mangalore University vice-chancellor K M Kaveriappa resolved that the responsibility of holding CET cannot be entrusted to universities by rotation given the number of types of tests (about 146) and other complications like question paper setting, confidentiality, valuation and identifying exam centres across the state.

"Since the selection process will last almost three to four months, the university to which the job is entrusted will not be able to cope with the work. During that period the academic, research and other works in the university will suffer," the committee noted.

To overcome the problem, the government has suggested two or three universities could come together to hold the test every year. "Since a single university cannot hold the test we will ask two or three universities to come together, distribute work and resources to conduct the test. We will work out a solution in the next IUB meeting," higher education secretary Kaushik Mukherjee told TOI.

The sub-committee was constituted after the Inter-University Board headed by higher education minister D H Shankaramurthy decided on September 22 to have a CET for admission to P-G courses in universities.

The government has already decided to admit students in the 50:40:10 ratio, with 50% of intake reserved for students from within the university, 40% for those from within the state and the remaining 10% for students outside the state.
