Change in CBSE Board Exam Pattern in 2008

CBSE X & XII board papers to become easier

CBSE modifies Exam Pattern from 2008-09. More emphasis on Testing Critical Thinking Skills

The exam pattern for both class X and XII is set to change this year and as per CBSE officials, the new paper format will make it easier and faster. The new pattern has more 'very short answer' type questions and lesser marks have been allotted for long answers than was the case earlier, ensuring less subjectivity.

The change in format will affect most subjects including Maths, Social Science and Science and Technology for Class X, and Economics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths for Class XII.

In line with the emphasis on testing 'higher order thinking skills', there will be a compulsory section of one-mark 'very short answer type' questions. "These questions resemble the multiple choice questions (MCQ) pattern and will judge conceptual understanding. However, we have avoided direct MCQs for two reasons — to ensure that the printed question paper itself doesn't get too lengthy with four options for each question and to avoid chances of cheating," said CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly.

16000 took GMAT in India in 2006 -IBNlive.com

New Delhi: From less than 6,000 in 2001, the number of Indians opting for GMAT increased to over 16,000 last year.

Out of the two lakh people taking GMAT every year across the world, about five per cent are from India.

Experts say, the number of GMAT takers in India is growing at 20 per cent per annum already.

“It's one of the five most popular exams in the world. It's also the fastest growing. Just three years ago, less than 10,000 students took the GMAT exam in India, so it's not only an ideal market, it's the fastest growing. And, we think, it could also be an indicator, where growth could be, in other countries in Asia,” said co-founder of Veritas Prep, Chad Troutwine.

Experts say, the number of GMAT takers from India will continue to grow at 20-25 per cent per annum for the next 3-5 years.

The increasing interest from Indians to study abroad, is cited to be the main reason for this growth. But that's not all.

"Three-four of the IIMs have launched a one-year executive program, which used GMAT score as their entry criteria. ISB is probably the biggest GMAT user, within the Indian market,” said Managing Director of Career Launcher, Nikhil Mahajan.

With this increasing interest not only from students, but from educational institutions as well, GMAT, it seems, has taken off in India..

SC Stays Law Entrance CET in Tamilnadu

July 19 : The Supreme Court of India Wednesday stayed the Madras High Court Judgment which directed the TN Government to hold the CET for Law Admission to Colleges and Universities in Tamilnadu for the Session 2007-08.

A three-Judge Bench comprising Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice R.V. Raveendran and Justice Dalveer Bhandari stayed the June 19 judgment on a special leave petition (SLP) filed by the State challenging the judgment.

The Bench, after hearing senior counsel Abhishek Singhvi for the State and K.M. Vijayan for one of the students, stayed the operation of the judgment and issued notice to the respondents.

Earlier, the State government had abolished the CET for engineering, medical and other professional courses and decided to admit students on the basis of marks obtained in the higher secondary examination. For law courses also a Government Order was passed in April abolishing the Law CET.

The State in its SLP said: “The Rules made by the Bar Council of India do not require that admission into law degree courses shall be made only on the basis of CET. There was no arbitrariness in the method of selection of students as selection was done purely on the basis of merit.”

MBBS from Philippines Medical Colleges

Seven hundred seats in the medical colleges of the Philippines have been earmarked for students from other Asian countries, especially India and China.

It will cost an Indian student between Rs.1.2 million to Rs.1.5 million to study in a Philippine university. The amount will include visa fees, course fees and accommodation expenses.

The government of Philippines has set aside the seats and Indian service provider Health Care Management International (HCMI) will officially represent here the Philippine government's Commission on Higher Education, which will offer the admissions.

"We are inviting students from India as we share a common language, English", said Cecelia P Reyes, a Philippine government representative in an interaction here Thursday.

She said there are nearly 100,000 Korean students in Philippine colleges. "In a few years time, we hope to reach that number with Indian students", she said.

Students who graduate from Philippine medical colleges will be given a certificate from the Medical Council of India so that they are able to practice in India, HCMI managing director Baljit Singh said.

Supreme Court to examine Tamil Nadu's quota policy

New Delhi, July 9 The Supreme Court Monday declined to stall the ongoing admissions to Tamil Nadu's medical colleges, but agreed to examine a student's petition that she might be denied admission in view of the state's quota regime despite clearing an entrance exam.

A bench of Justices B.N. Agarwal and P.P. Naolekar refused to stay the ongoing counselling for admissions to medical colleges. It, however, said the final admission would be subject to the outcome of the hearing over S. Swathe's petition.

The bench also issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government, besides the selection committee of the state's Directorate of Medical Education and the Tamil Nadu Private Medical Colleges Association.

Swathe sought the court's intervention to ensure a seat for her, fearing she might be denied admission to a private medical college despite being reasonably high in the merit list.

She pointed out that as per the state's quota policy, the private medical colleges were forced to surrender 65 percent of their seats to the state government for admitting students belonging to the schedule castes, schedule tribes and other backward classes (OBCs).

Swathe said in July 2006 she had secured 177th rank out of the 350 aspirants declared successful in the common entrance examination of the state's private medical colleges.

But soon after the declaration of the result, the private medical colleges surrendered 65 percent of their seats to the government, jeopardising her chances of getting admission, Swathe added.

She sought a direction to the state government not to force the private medical colleges to admit students of weaker sections of the society at the cost of students figuring in the merit list of the successful candidates in the entrance examination.
