Coaching Institutes in Income Tax Net


In its ongoing drive against tax evasion, the Income Tax department conducted surveys at nine premises of different institutions engaged in imparting coaching for competitive examinations (coaching institutes), deployment of manpower in various institutions (placement agencies), air-services institutes and foreign-education placement agencies in Delhi and Mumbai on 9.8.2007.

Based on the evidence collected during these surveys and subsequent investigations, various concerns have already admitted tax evasion amounting to Rs.26.75 crore.

Further investigations in these cases are in progress and detection of more tax evasion is likely.

Unfair Trade Practices by IIPM


PIB Press Release: (Aug. 14) - Based on the complaints received and suo-motu on the basis of the information given on the website of Indian Institute of Planning & Management (IIPM) offering free international study tours and free laptops to students of MBA/BBA, the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices (MRTP) Commission has initiated action against the IIPM. The matter has been referred to the Director General (Investigation & Registration) to investigate and file the Preliminary Investigation Report. The MRTP Commission can take cognizance of such advertisements under the provisions of MRTP Act.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued a show cause notice to the Indian Institute of Planning and Management, New Delhi and has placed the name of the Institution in the list of Institutions which are running technical courses without their approval, on their web-site.

This information was given by Shri Prem Chand Gupta, Minister of Corporate Affairs in reply to the questions raised by Shri Dharam Pal Sabharwal in Rajya Sabha today.

Kerala Self-Financing colleges admission from August 16


TRIVANDRUM — The admission process in self-financing medical and engineering colleges in Kerala, derailed by an interim order of the high court, will start anew on August 16 subject to the final court judgment.

The admissions to both merit and management quota seats in colleges will be on the basis of the fees approved by Justice P. A. Mohammed, Education Minister M.A Baby said while announcing the fresh allotment schedule here yesterday. He said that the fees in the colleges that have reached an agreement with the government will change if the high court approves the new fee structure evolved as per the agreement. At the time of admissions, the students will have to furnish a bond in this regard. Students who secure admission in the merit quota will have to pay lower fees and those securing admissions in 35 per cent of the 50 per cent management quota seats will have to pay higher fees if the high court approves the fee structure. The fee for 15 per cent NRI quota remains unchanged.

Fellowship for 600 tribal students in India


New Delhi, Aug 7 (IANS) India will provide fellowships worth Rs.1,600 million to help 600 tribal students to take up higher education.

The ministry of tribal affairs Tuesday said the fellowship was provided under the Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship Scheme for pursuing higher studies such as M.Phil and Ph.D degrees at universities and institutions recognised by the University Grant Commission. Financial assistance of Rs.8,000 per month is provided for the initial two years to Junior Research Fellows and Rs.9,000 per month for the remaining period of the fellowship.

Beside this fellowship amount, a contingency fund for humanities and social sciences is also provided at the rate of Rs.10,000 per annum for the initial two years of the fellowship and Rs.20,500 annually for the remaining period of research work.

CA-CPT Question Paper Leaked - Test Cancelled


Test will now be held on August 26, Sunday


Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICA) cancelled the Common Proficiency Test (CPT) as the paper had leaked. Now the Test will be held on August 26, ICAI president Sunil Talati said.

The common proficiency test (CPT) conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) today morning was cancelled later in the day owing to a paper leak at two examination centres.

Nearly 82,000 students appeared at the examination across 209 centres in India and also in Kathmandu and Dubai.

This is for the first time that the CA paper had leaked in its history of 57 years. There are two papers in the test which began at 9 am. However, a channel started showing papers at 8.45 am. The test is for entrance for the CA studies and is held after HSC.

CPT is the entrance examination for those aspiring to be chartered accountants and is conducted by the ICAI, the regulatory body for the profession. Leak of the question paper of one of the toughest exams in the country had created panic among examinees in the morning.

Haryana Govt. ties up with Cambridge


Haryana on Thursday became the first State in the country to have a sub-centre of Britain’s Cambridge University for certification in English language proficiency.

The British Council and the Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, a university for women at Khanpur Kalan in Sonepat district, signed a memorandum of understanding to offer Business English Certificate (BEC) and Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) from the University of Cambridge ESOL examinations to the students of the Mahila Vishwavidyalaya.

The MoU was signed by Minister of Cultural Affairs British Council Division, British High Commission Rod Pryde and Vice- Chancellor of the university Anuradha Gupta, in the presence of Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, on the university campus.

Edulogicx ties up with Reliance to conduct mock pre-CAT


Edulogicx India Private Limited, a Bangalore-based knowledge network services company, will conduct online mock pre-CAT examinations for the aspirants of CAT-2007 on August 11-12. The exam will be held at all the 241 Reliance World outlets.
Edulogicx will be using the technology platform VEDAS (Virtual Education Delivery and Assessment System) for the test.
Students can register online (www.edulogicx.com), and get the hall tickets from the nearest Reliance World outlet.
Approximately 25,000 candidates will get assessed on a single technology platform, which is likely to create a world record of non-stop online examination, an Edulogicx press release said.
“The special feature of the mock test is students who register online will be eligible for free use of 'Educard' for a period of 15 days,” it added.
Reliance Web World Private Limited has signed an MoU with Edulogicx for marketing Educards through their web world stores across the country.

Lucknow Univ. starts MA/MSc Programme in Bio-Statistics


The Lucknow University (LU) has started a MA/MSc Programme in Bio-Statistics, intended to provide post-graduate level teaching in medical statistics, epidemiology and public health. “The course is being launched to meet the ever-increasing demand for Bio-Statisticians in the country,” said university officials.

LU officials said both programmes would be four-semester programmes, with 30 seats each. The eligibility requirements for admission in these courses include a BA/BSc (Maths/Bio group) with mathematics at the intermediate/higher secondary level.

New Fee Structure for Punjab PVT. Medical Colleges


Government of Punjab announced he new fee structure for Private Medical/Dental/Ayurvedic and Homeopathic Colleges of the State to be implemented from the year 2007-2008.

The annual fee for MBBS would be Rs. 1,15,000 per annum , for BDS it would be Rs 63,250 per annum. For BAMS and BHMS the fee would be charged is Rs. 40,250/- per annum respectively.

For PG Medical courses - Clinical MD/MS fee would be charged Rs. 2,99,000/- per annum. The fee would be Rs. 2,01,250 per annum for Basic MD/MSand the fee for Post Graduate Diploma Courses would be Rs. 2,30,000/- per annum, Clinic MDS would be Rs. 1,72,750/- per annum.


The New fee structure has been announced under the powers conferred under section 7(1) of the Punjab Private Health Science Education Institution Regulation of admission, Fixation of fee and making of reservation Act 2006, and all other powers given therein.

IIMs Admission Notice 2008 for Fellowship in Management


IIM Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) Commencing from June 2008.

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the Doctoral Programme of the IIMs

Eligibility varies in different IIMs. It includes:

* Post-graduation with Institute-specific cut-off
* B.E/B.Tech. With Institute for any of the above examinations in any relevant discipline can also apply.
