IDB Scholarship Programme for Indian Muslim Students

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Jeddah has initiated an IDB Scholarship Programme to improve the educational standards of the Muslim Community in India. The Bank aims to develop the potentialities of the Muslim Students by awarding Loan Scholarship to the students who are meritorious and enthusiastic, but are unable to pursue higher studies due to financial difficulties.

The IDB Scholarship is an Interest Free Loan in nature and is awarded to Muslim Students who intend to take admission in First Year of the Professional Degree Course in the fields of Medicine i.e. MBBS, BDS, Pharmacy, Veterinary, Physiotherapy, Nursing including Bachelor Degree in Unani, Ayurvedic & Microbiology or Engineering, Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, Food Technology, Business Administration and Accountancy. This scholarship is for the entire duration of the course. It will be legal and moral obligation of the students to repay these Loans after completion of their course. IIMs to be empowered to award degrees

The government Thursday said it was formulating a law to empower the premium Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to offer degrees like universities without curtail their autonomy.

"The government has been examining the issue of bringing the IIMs in the country under an umbrella legislation like the Institutes of Technology Act. It will empower the IIMs to award degrees to students, which they are not competent to do at present," the human resource development (HRD) ministry said in a statement.

"It may be clarified that bringing the IIMs under the ambit of a central law will in no way alter their accountability to parliament or their status of being public institutions," it said.

India has six IIMs at Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Lucknow, Khozhikode and Indore, providing industry-oriented postgraduate diplomas and executive certificate programmes.

Refuting media reports that the ministry is trying to quell the vocal IIMs and curtail their autonomy through the planned law, the ministry said the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have been flourishing as institutes of excellence under the Institutes of Technology Act and "their autonomy has in no way been adversely affected under the said act".

CEED 2008 - Common Entrance Examination for Design Dates

CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) is an all India examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT, Bombay), on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Government of India.

The examination tests the candidates for visual perception ability, drawing skills, design aptitude and communication skills.

CEED is a qualifying examination for admission to Post Graduate M.Des. programmes at the Industrial Design Centre (IIT Bombay), Instrument Design and Development Centre (IIT Delhi), Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (IISc Bangalore) and Design Programme (IIT Kanpur). For IIT Kanpur GATE is also a qualifying examination. Candidates also have to fulfill other requirements such as tests & interviews of the respective institutions for admission

Kerala keen to set up university for NRIs

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 18 Kerala is ready to set up a university for non-resident Indians (NRIs), Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Tuesday informed the Kerala assembly.

"We are keen to have it in our state and I assure you that we will provide all necessary infrastructure, and if needed we will give it for free," said Achuthanandan in response to Congress legislator M. Murali who raised the issue.

Murali urged the house that Kerala should take the lead in setting up an NRI university since the largest number of expatriates was from Kerala.

Incidentally, this is the first time Kerala has come forward to set up a university for non-resident Indians. Other southern states have already pitched in for this.

The proposed university would be a deemed university with 50 per cent of the seats to be reserved for children of NRIs and the remaining seats for Indian residents.

According to the guidelines, the institute should be run by a trust formed in India and the state government should allot it the required land. A reputed educational institute functioning abroad would handle the overall management.

The Union Cabinet recently cleared the proposal under the University Grants Commission Act, and decided the university would be located in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The university would be a boon for Indians living abroad. Students from nearly 130 countries, particularly in the developing world, where educational facilities are either not available or are limited, look up to India for their higher educational needs.
