33 Private Engineering Colleges in Tamilnadu ordered to Close

Tamil Nadu to set up 20 new Engineering Colleges

Chennai, Nov 24 As many as 33 private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu have been ordered to be closed down for collecting high tuition fees from students, education minister K. Ponmudi said here Saturday.

However, the government plans to set up 20 new engineering colleges.

It has written to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recommending it to de-affiliate 33 engineering colleges and to take action against them.

"We have written to the AICTE to take action against these colleges for collecting fees more than the amount fixed by the government, Ponmudi said.

The government is also planning a Common University Act to "streamline the functioning of institutions," he added.

The 20 new engineering colleges planned will be under the new Act.

These colleges "will fulfil the long-felt need for an engineering college in each district of Tamil Nadu," Ponmudi said.

CAT 2007 - Pattern Same as 2006

In 2006, there had been a considerable shift in pattern of CAT. Though the total number of questions for each of the three sections (verbal, data interpretation and quantitative aptitude) has gone down, each question has more options now. In CAT 2006, there was a change in negative marking. While till 2005 it was 33%, it was reduced to 25% last year.

This Year (2007) Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission into MBA programs at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) followed exactly the same pattern and format as it did in 2006. 75 questions, 25 in each section, 4 marks for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong answer.

Various Coaching Institutes are busy working on the Analysis of the CAT 2007 paper.

From MBA Universe:

Career Launcher believes that CAT was moderately difficult this year. When asked about what cutoffs does Career Launcher prescribe, Mr Lahiri said, “We expect the Quant section cut-off to be 26 to 28; Language section cutoff between 26 to 28 and LR & DI section cutoff between 34 to 36. Career Launcher believes that overall cutoffs will be in the range of 102 to 107.

Nearly 2.30,000 students took exam in 23 cities across the country for admission into Top Indian B-schools. In 2006, approx. 1.8 lakh students had appeared for the test last year. About 35,000 students from Delhi region appeared for the test.
