Fewer Questions in AIEEE 2008

Over nine lakh candidates appeared for the All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE) -2008 at 1,299 centres on Sunday.

Though some were expecting it, many complained about the tough physics section in the paper. Generally physics, chemistry and mathematics sections have 40 questions each, but this year there were 35. ( Total 105 Questions)

A new thing in Sunday's paper is that a few questions, particularly in physics and chemistry are based on practical applications," director of a private coaching institute in Delhi, said, adding "it's a good initiative on the part of the CBSE".

"The reasoning questions in the physics and mathematics sections were introduced for the first time in AIEEE exam. It wasn't there last year. Physics was the toughest section, while chemistry was scoring. Maths was moderate as we were expecting a difficult section." said another student

Students were quite satisfied with the chemistry section and felt it was quite straight forward. Teachers were of the same opinion. "Any child could score the maximum in the chemistry section. More than class 12, questions were lifted more from the syllabus of class 11." said a chemistry teacher.

Students were expecting a tough mathematics section after the IIT JEE paper, in which maths was the most trickiest of them all. But the section that really took them by surprise was physics which generally is more scoring. "We were expecting physics to be easy, but that was not the case. The paper was analytical and required reasoning. Since there was negative marking I could not take a chance on questions I was not sure about." said another Student

Happy with the standard of questioning, coaching institutes felt that the trend will help test the reasoning and analytical capability of students, which CBSE was not doing in the previous years.

WBJEE 2008 postponed due to paper leak

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE 2008) for admission to undergraduate courses in Engineering/Technology/ Medical/Dental /Veterinary and Pharmacy in Universities/Colleges in West Bengal and B. Arch Course in Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur and Jadavpur University scheduled to be held today (April 20, 2008) has been postponed by the WBJEE board after the physics, chemistry and biology papers were leaked.

The next date for the exam will be decided when the board meets next week with higher education minister Sudarshan Roychaudhuri and the higher education secretary in attendance.

Two persons, Arun Chowdhury and Mihir Dandapatt, were arres-ted on Saturday in West Midnapore's Ghatal, where the three papers were being sold for Rs 2.5 lakh.

The arrests came hours after the police received a call. The caller gave the police a cellphone number and said they would know abo-ut JEE papers being leaked after tracing the user of the mobile.

The police have informed JEE chairman Siddhartha Dutta and senior higher education officials about the sale of the papers. "The papers recovered from Ghatal were brought to the board's Salt Lake office for verification on Saturday morning," said a senior higher education department official.

After a thorough check, the duplicate papers were found to be identical to the original ones, barring figures and diagrams.

"Figures and diagrams were missing. However, the rest of the questions were the same as those in the original papers. We immediately decided to defer WBJEE 2008," said the official.

The duplicate question papers were on physics, chemistry and biology. Significantly, mathematics was not among the papers recovered. "This is a clear indication that medical exam seats were the target," explained the official.

CLAT 2008 will be entirely Objective - NLSIU VC

"CLAT 2008 will be entirely objective. The exam is going to be held on a much larger scale and it is not possible by the organisers to evaluate subjective-type questions, especially when the competition level is going to be rather stiff. When the cut-off is going to vary by half or three-quarters of a mark, it is not fair to have subjective questions. CAT, CET… every test is objective. Some prestigious law colleges in the country will come together on May 11 to conduct the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) . With this, for the first time in the country, admission to seven national law schools will be through a common entrance examination. These institutions are located in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Raipur and Gandhinagar. Apart from them, the law colleges in Patna, Lucknow and Patiala will use the CLAT score for admission.

Each of the seven schools will get a chance to conduct the annual examination by rotation. This year, it is the turn of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

On being asked if CLAT would improve the quality of legal education or help streamline law education in the country, the VC replied, "With CLAT, the standard of students seeking legal education will definitely improve. I am hoping that all leading law schools in the country will join. I do not mean just colleges in the government sector, but also prestigious and quality institutions such as ILF-Pune. For instance, in the U.S., they have LSAT. If there is an integrated law entrance procedure, naturally the students will compete and get better. And as for the NLS, obviously the quality of students will be better if the “catchment area” becomes the entire country."

Until last year, students had to sit for separate entrance tests and also had to pay Rs. 1,000 for each exam. Application forms are now available for Rs. 2,000, which will considerably reduce the financial burden on students. Previously students had to write several exams and travel to different centres.

Most of these National Law Schools have applicants from all over the country.

This common test will make it much less cumbersome for students.

3.2 lakh students sit for 6600 IIT seats

Over Three lakh students will be taking the IIT Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) today (Sunday), which is the first big competitive exam after the announcement of 27 per cent quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in premier higher education institutes.

There are a total of 6,600 seats. Out of proposed 8 new IITs, at least three are expected to be operational this year, which will add 2,000 more seats.

The test is held in 600 centres across the country, including 117 centres in Delhi zone.There has been no change in the question pattern this time, Officials said.

The IIT JEE last year decided to change the pattern, making provision for two papers in place of three earlier. Each paper consist of questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The questions are of objective type.

The format of the examination remains the same as before. It comprises two papers of 200 marks each.

Last year about 2.5 lakh students appe-ared for the IIT-JEE, while this year there’s a 40 per cent increase in the ranks of IIT aspirants.

OBC Quota in Educational Institutes, SC Judgment Details

In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the legislation providing 27% quota for other backward castes (OBCs) in centrally funded educational institutions, including IITs and IIMs.

The economically well off, also known as the “creamy layer” from amongst the OBCs, however, will remain out of the quota’s ambit. A review of the quota’s continuation would have to be done every five years, the apex court said.

Karnataka CET 2008 Admit Cards

Around 1.13 lakh students will appear for the one day Karnataka CET 2008 to be conducted on April 19. Last year about 1.02 lakh candidates attempted the CET.

Computerised Admit Cards: The CET admit cards, from this year will be computerised. “Admit cards with the photograph can be downloaded in cases where students have not received their admit cards under unavoidable situations. Students need not panic at the last moment if they have misplaced or lost their admit card’’ said SG Hegde, KEA Director and Pre-University Commissioner.

The admit cards for CET 2008 can be downloaded from the KEA website http:// kea.kar.nic.in from April 10 onwards.

Fewer students sit for AIPMT 2008

Only 1.6 lakh students appeared for the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) 2008 conducted by the CBSE. It's a significant - 40,000 - drop in numbers, a substantial 25% decrease from last year.

For Delhi, the numbers are more alarming. Only 26,366 students appeared for the paper, as against the almost 40,000 students who sat for the entrance in 2007. That the numbers highlight the huge disparity between salaries of doctors and other professionals is a fact that even CBSE acknowledges.

What are the reasons ?

While one of the reasons is changes in eligibility criteria, the larger reason is that more students are preferring to opt for engineering.

Analysts feel that the main reason the long gestation period in medicine before one gets a degree and starts earning has always been a deterrent, which has only gotten highlighted by the huge salaries that engineers, armed with an additional management degree, are getting nowadays.

In Engineering the number of students applying for engineering exams is increasing every year while medicine doesn't see a corresponding increase. In 2008, more than 8 lakh applicants have already signed on for the AIEEE 2008 - an engineering entrance conducted by CBSE.

While there is a declining trend of aspirants for PMT, the number of students wanting to appear for the IIT entrance, scheduled on April 13, has gone up by about 70,000 this year.

Nearly 3.2 lakh students would appear in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission in seven IITs across the country. Last year about 2.5 lakh students had appeared the test.

But this year's drop is quite worrying, admits both CBSE and other educationists. Experts say that s the trend is alarming, and has only increased in the past few years.

In schools also, there has been a drastic drop in the number of students opting for Biology in the senior secondary level.

Students prefer to go for either engineering or commerce since the salaries are wonderful. Medicine on the other hand is a long process and a Master's is a must. Even thereafter, the salaries don't compare with what other professions get.

The lack of interest will, educationists fear, lead to poor quality of health services in the future. ''We need good doctors and if bright students refuse to opt for the stream, it's a worrying scenario,'' adds another educationist.

Pondicherry cancels common entrance Tests

Puducherry government abolished Common Entrance Test (CET) for students seeking admission to professional courses with immediate effect.

The announcement was made in the Puducherry Assembly by Education Minister M O H F Shahjahan at the end of a debate on a calling attention motion tabled by legislators of various parties today, asking to do away with the tests.>> Read More

Tamilnadu CET issue in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has sought a response from the Tamil Nadu Government on a petition seeking revival of the Common Entrance Test (CET), abolished last year, for admissions to professional courses in the state for academic session 2008-09.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan issued a notice to the state government on a petition challenging the Madras High Court verdict upholding the Tamil Nadu law abolishing the CET.

The High Court while doing away with the Test paved the way for a new method of admissions based on marks secured in class XII examinations.

The High Court on April 27 last year had upheld the 'Tamil Nadu Admissions in Professional Educational Institutions Act 2006', which abolished the CET, by dismissing a petition against it.

The High Court had observed that the impugned law was to prevent harassment of students in securing admissions to professional colleges.

Aligarh Muslim University to hold Entrance Test at 5 centres

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has decided to hold a Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to different professional courses at five centres in the country, a senior official said today.

The decision has been taken at the special meeting of the University's Executive Council which was held for reviewing the matter, the official said.

The Executive Council has cleared the proposal for holding entrance tests in different parts of the country on January 17.

The university later decided to review this decision in the wake of certain technical objections raised by the teacher's association, the official said.

Following the decision of the meeting, the University will now proceed with its earlier decision of holding the CET at Aligarh, Bhopal, Calicut, Kolkata and Pune, the official added.

2. Candidates who have applied for AIEEE 2008 and in case their particulars are not available on Board’s website are advised to approach the Board at the address given below alongwith:
